It has shown promise in helping reverse or stop the effects of memory loss. A survey was conducted by Third National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, in which 4,809 people took part. The antioxidants Vitamin A, C, E, and Beta-Carotene were studied with only Vitamin E showing signs of being associated with the improvement in memory levels³.
It is an omega-3 fatty acid, derived from fish oil that has been associated with memory function and maintaining a positive mental state. A study was conducted on nearly 5,400 elderly people who had a high intake of fish rich in DHA. Those people were less likely to develop memory disorders, dementia, memory loss, and Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin E is needed to protect DHA against oxidative damage⁴ ‾ ⁵.
It has been found to improve mental function at any age. It has been shown to improve circulation and enhance nerve transmission in the brain. Ginkgo Biloba acts as a powerful antioxidant, improving blood supply to the brain, and sharpening mental function, which allows the brain to get enough blood oxygen and energy. It assists glucose to the cells of blood vessel walls, cleans up free radicals, and neutralizes harmful substances in the blood⁶.
It is used to help prevent a decline in learning capacity. It is present in the structure of cell membranes and is thought to help repair cell membranes. A 1987 study by Italian scientists has shown evidence of a decrease in dementia. The study showed that rats given Phosphatidylserine orally had age dependent declines in cerebral functions and improved memory deficits⁷.
Research suggests there may be a correlation regarding Acetyl L-Carnitine with brain and blood chemistry, metabolism and aging. Acetyl L-Carnitine, an amino acid, has shown improvement in cognitive function and memory. Two separate studies were conducted with Alzheimer's patients taking Acetyl L-Carnitine. The results showed a significantly reduced decline in mental deterioration than compared with a placebo⁸.
It is another amino acid thought to play a role in mental sharpness and memory improvements. It is commonly referred to as Glutamic acid or 'brain food' which is used as an energy source by the brain. Glutamine transforms to Glutamic acid in the brain itself after successfully passing the blood-brain barrier⁹. It also helps strengthen immunity brought on by stress¹⁰.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
It is used as a potent antioxidant that detoxifies heavy metals and regulates blood sugar levels. It acts as a key constituent in energy production, slowing the aging process, and may help regenerate neurons in humans. This would make it potentially useful for brain neuro-degenerated diseases¹¹ ‾ ¹².
Young or Old
Memory loss does not always start after a certain age. There are many different factors that go into memory loss and it has been said that certain kinds can be prevented or reversed under some circumstances. It is also beneficial to enhance mental function while still young.
